Head Coach Travis Hergert
Travis Hergert enters his 5th season as the Head Baseball Coach at NIACC. In 4 seasons with Hergert at the helm, the NIACC baseball program has reached epic heights. With a 152-81 record in that span, NIACC baseball has claimed 3 Region IX Regional tournament championships, 3 North Plains titles, and 3 trips to the NJCAA World Series in Enid, Oklahoma.
Hergert was honored with the 2013, 2015, and 2016 ABCA/NJCAA Division II North Plains District coach of the year and won the 2-year college coach of the year by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association in 2013 and 2015.
The 2016 squad shattered the record books, with a 47-16 record and a third trip to the NJCAA World Series. They tied for the ICCAC regular season title with a 22-6 record. Nine players signed with NCAA Division I schools. Iowa signee and ICCAC Player of the Year Malique Zielger was selected in the 22nd round in the MLB draft by the San Fransico Giants, the programs first ever draft pick. Ziegler was awarded NJCAA 1st-team All-American honors, the second first team selction in program history.
The Trojan offense lead the way with 130 home runs. Short stop Robbie Glendinning became the schools all-time hits (195), doubles (42), RBI (141) and Home Runs (33). He holds the 5th highest career batting average with a .390 clip.
Also leading the charge in the lineup were 2-time All-Region selections Troy Bullingham, Austin LaDoux and Spencer Halloran. Bullingham ranks in the top 3 in most offensive categories. The Creighton signee smashed 18 HR's and 19 doubles while driving in 82.
The pitching staff was just as dominant, knotching 471 strikeouts. Leading the charge was ace Dan Loats, a UNC-Greensboro commit. Loats set the school record for wins in a season with 11 and moved into 2nd all-time in wins with 15 and became the schools all-time strikeout leader with 148.
That pitching staff included freshman sensation Derek Lieurance. The Iowa commit kotched 9 wins tied for 2nd most in a season, and became the single season strikeout leader with 96. Closer Danny Beizer racked up 11 saves, the most in a season at NIACC.
In 2015, NIACC was 49-16 overall (school record for wins) and 20-8 in the ICCAC. The Trojans won the NJCAA Region XI tournament and claimed the North Plains District title to advance to the NJCAA Division II World Series for the second time in three seasons. Freshman shortstop Robbie Glendinning was honored with 1st-Team All-Region and 2nd Team All-American honors. Nine players from that squad were tabbed with All-Region XI honors.
In 2014, Hergert's squad finished 25-31 with a third-place finish in the NJCAA Region XI tournament, the second highest finish in school history. Freshman Ryan Moran led the Trojans offensivley and was named 1st Team All-Region for his efforts. Sophomore Nick Veale notched 5 victories on the mound for the Trojans. The Minnesota State University - Mankato signee placed himself second all-time in wins with 11.
In 2013, NIACC was 31-18 overall and 13-11 in the ICCAC in Hergert's first season as the Trojans' head baseball coach after spending the previous eight seasons as the team's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
NIACC won the NJCAA Region XI tournament, won the North Plains district title and placed fifth at the NJCAA Division II World Series.
The 2013 pitching staff accumulated the 2nd best all-time staff ERA of 3.42. Anchored by hurlers Lucas Bakker (2.66), an Elon University signee, a 2nd-team All-NJCAA Region XI selection, and Tim Black (1.88), the Trojans pitching staff charged through the NJCAA Region XI and North Plains District tournaments, enroute to the school's first ever appearance in the NJCAA Division II World Series.
Black, a Central Michigan signee, spun one of the best performances in world series history, as he stuckout a series record 16 batters in the opening round victory, 2-0 over Madison College. Black was selected to the world series all-tournament team. Four pitchers from Hergert 2013 staff signed with NCAA Division I schools.
Since Hergert has skippered the program, 20 players have signed to play Division I baseball. Most recently highlighted by two players signing to the elite Southeastern Conference (SEC), Robbie Glendinning to the Univerisity of Missouri and Luke Becker to the University of Kentucky.
In 2012, the NIACC pitching staff posted the lowest ERA as a team since Hergert's arrival in 2005. The Trojan pitching staff posted an ICCAC-leading 3.37 team ERA. Black posted a school record 1.88 ERA and was selected honorable mention all-region.
In eight seasons as the NIACC pitching coach, eight pitchers have been selected to the all-region team and eight have signed with NCAA Division I schools.
In his first season as pitching coach, Hergert's pitching staff posted a school record 39 wins and featured two NJCAA all-region XI selections, including pitcher of the year and Arizona State signee, Steve Salas.
In 2006, Hergert helped two more pitchers to all-region honors. Luke Kalb earned 2nd-team honors, while Brian Prusinski received honorable mention.
The 2007 season featured two pitchers from the NIACC pitching staff to sign with NCAA Division I schools. Tom Heithoff and Jared Koch signed with Evansville University and South Dakota State University, respectively. Heithoff was named NJCAA Region XI Player of the Year and earned 3rd-Team All-American honors. Heithoff continued a very successful career at Evansville earning back-to-back 2nd-Team All-Missouri Valley honors as a utility player, and lead the MVC in saves for two consecutive seasons. Also that season, NIACC closer Zack Welter received NJCAA Region IX 2nd-Team all-region honors as a reliever while piling up a school record eight saves. Welter went on to be NIACC's all-time saves leader with 16.
After his pitching career, Hergert spent the 2004 season as an assistant coach at his alma mater Mount Mercy College (IA). He is also employed as the Director of Housing. He and his wife Kim and sons Brody and Owen reside in Mason City.
